Imagine you could erase your bad memories. To what lengths would you go to erase them? I just read a newspaper editorial about a new drug in development (propanolol) that could do just that. Wow! I can see where this may be helpful, such as harsh traumatic events, but what about every day troubles? What if this drug were ultimately made available to the mainstream public?

I doubt what the side effects of this drug would be to a person who has not had a distressing event. More than the physical side effects, would it be help a person have a better aptitude to handle other situations? I this case would erase the bad memories really work?

Our fight or flight response is an in-born response that helps us when we are faced with a potentially unsafe situation. But what if the occasion is just plain old frightening.......like public speaking? Most people would somewhat die than get up in front of a room full of people and make a speech. By frequently experiencing the fear of public speaking, then sympathetically reflecting on the knowledge, a person could eventually become very skilled at it and maybe even enjoy it. They won’t at al times wish to erase bad memories of former public speaking that they totally sucked.

Taking a potentially terrified situation and getting through it ultimately teaches the mind that it's ok. Trust develops and a person's comfort zone expands. This once fearful state of affairs could help this person to handle this and other equally fearful situations in the future.

What things have you ever come across that you were once fearful of that you have now learned to handle? How have those events helped you handle other events in your life? What potential situations are you fearful of confronting? How can your past experiences help you in this forthcoming situation? Write up your opinion or discuss it with someone. And that will be the first step in trying to erase your bad memories.
